Let's start this with full disclosure. I used to work at Metropolis as Crispin Murray's assistant, and I am still close friends with many of the mastering engineers there. I have used Andy 'Hippy' Baldwin and Phil Joannides at Metropolis for mastering many of my mixes, and have always been very happy with the quality of work done by these two great engineers. No shortcuts are taken, and the attention to detail even on low budget indie mixes is incredible. From my time there, I know how much effort goes into ensuring the cleanest possible signal path. Much of the equipment is customised and several now common mastering hardware units (and even several software algorithms) were initially developed in the studio.
