PUZZLE FACTORY SOUND STUDIOS, LONDON

Dax Liniere is a man on a mission. Having moved to London only last year, the Australian record producer and mixer is already close to completing the construction of a new 5-room studio complex in Seven Sisters, North London. AllStudios invited him to explain his vision for Puzzle Factory Sound Studios, and why he felt the need for such a drastic move.

“Having worked with many artists across many genres in Australia for 15 years, I felt it was time to take the next step in my life. So in 2016, I packed all my worldly possessions into a shipping container and sent them to the other side of the world to set up shop in London. In 2012, I spent a couple weeks in the studio with Alan Moulder and Flood.” (Dax actually designed and built Alan’s desk, but that’s another story.) “With my French/German ancestry, I’d always seen myself relocating to Europe but it was Flood, in fact, who suggested the move to London. I was explaining why I thought Berlin was my best option when he looked me straight in the eyes and said ‘You should move to London.’ How do you ignore that?”

From the start, Dax has been hands-on with the new build. “I’m passionate about every project I take on and the studio build has been no exception. I’ve led the construction myself to ensure the spaces were completed to my near-OCD standards; from the first timber to the last lick of paint. Even down to the details of the interior design! All were integral in creating a space with an excellent working vibe that would draw like-minded passionate and talented people.”

The new studio complex, named Puzzle Factory Sound Studios, is a brand new, purpose-built complex with 2 live rooms and 3 control rooms, designed by American acoustician Jeff Hedback. Each room has abundant natural light via skylights, very solid construction, floated floors with real oak flooring, ducted air con and ventilation, heavy double-doors and acoustic treatment. There’s also a lounge area with kitchenette featuring a DeLonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine!”

Currently two control rooms are available on long-term lets of 1 year.

Control Room 2 (£1,600pcm on time-share, incl electricity, rates, water, service charge and fibre broadband). This spacious control room is approx 4.7 x 4.5m, with a jazz club vibe and Art Deco fixtures. Dax is offering a 50%* time-share on this space to accommodate his own recording projects. (*50% guaranteed minimum. Dax will work primarily from Control Room 1, mixing and mastering.) The rental includes 2 live rooms, furniture, leather sofa and rack of boutique mic preamps from Chandler, Great River, Daking, Pendulum, et al.

Live Room A is 5.5 x 4.7m. Live Room B is 3.0 x 2.7m. Each has large windows for clear line-of-sight between all rooms.

Control Room 3 (£1,400pcm for exclusive use, including electricity, rates, water, service charge and fibre broadband.) A 4 x 3m acoustically-treated space with abundant natural light, ideal for a composer or mix engineer. Dax explained, “This room is provided without equipment or furniture. There isn’t a dedicated live space with this rental, but adjacent Live Room B is available for free whenever it’s not in use. We’ll even leave the fabric colour choice of acoustic treatments up to you!”

The studios can be reached via an 8 min walk from Seven Sisters’ main road, underground / overground station, National Rail and buses, and it’s a minute’s walk from Markfield Park, cafes and supermarkets. There is also limited free on-street parking available.
